kevinkhaw1997 The lady you guys are looking at is Mrs.Toh (69 y/o), who still sells "KIAM KOAY", Fried Sago, and Nasi Lemak in the weekend infront of her house at Chew Jetty.
She was born in 1952 at Tan Jetty, Penang. After getting married to her late husband, she moved to Chew Jetty. She used to sell Char Koay Teow at the kopitiam outside Chew Jetty at night, but she fell down one day and injured her leg. Then, she was unable to walk as frequent as last time, so she stopped frying Koay Teow at the kopitiam.
To survive, she started cooking and selling foods in her house and sold them to the neighbours. Last time she used to sell prawn fritters, dumplings, fried sagos etc with the help of her daugther and some relative.
But as time passes by, everyone has their own things to commit, she is now only cooking "Kiam Koay" , Fried Sagos, and Nasi Lemak at the weekend due to the lack of help.
Althought the Jetties are listed as Unesco World Heritage site in 2008, she told us it didnt really boost her business because most tourist just walk pass their shop, and didnt buy the food. Mostly it was locals that came to buy her food, some even booked a few packs.
She told me, "To survive and have enough money to eat and live comfortably, I have to cook and sell these foods every weekend"
Although she was already at this age, she still work hard to make sure she can cover her cost of living and hopefully travel to other countries when the pandemic is over.
She sells "Kiam Koay" and Fried Sago on Saturday and Nasi lemak on Sunday!
Those who want to support her can visit her at Chew Jetty!
She only sells limited quantity each day! She sells her food around 8am and closes around 12pm.
