The one and only Songkok Maker in Penang today is the man you are looking at, Mr.Haja. Mr.Haja's shop is located at Little India's Nagore Dargha Temple. The business started back in 1962, when Mr.Haja was still in school, after school he will always go and help his dad to make songkok for a living. At that time, most songkok was handmade, and there are a few shops around Penang for people to buy in. However, when Industrial Revolution started, songkoks were mass produced by big company. Soon enough, all songkok makers closed down in Penang except for this one. Mr.Haja is now making songkok with his son-in-law, hoping he will pass down the skills and craft which was passed down by his father. He did mentioned now adays the business was not as good anymore, as less people wear songkoks nowadays. Moreover, most of the songkok is durable, and since it was used only few days a week, it can actually be kept for several years. He also said that, if its not for the cheap rental, they wouldnt have sustained the business for so long. Mr.Haja's had also been awarded "Living Heritage Treasures of Penang" as he is now the one and only Songkok Maker in Penang. I asked again the same question I asked to other old craft businesses, "What makes you continue to make songkok after all these years?" The answer from them will always be "Passion". From Mr.Haja's words we can see that he is fully passionate about making songkok and hope to preserve this hundred years old craft. Mr.Haja doesnt look like he is 73 years old as he is still strong and speaks very clear! He mentioned many of his friends already passed away, but I supposed it was because he has a clear mission in mind to keep going and preserve the art of making songkok in Malaysia. #Wallpaper #92 #92Malaysia #92kol #92KOLMY #sony #alphauniversemy #Malaysia #malaysian

The lady you guys are looking at is Mrs.Toh (69 y/o), who still sells "KIAM KOAY", Fried Sago, and Nasi Lemak in the weekend infront of her house at Chew Jetty. She was born in 1952 at Tan Jetty, Penang. After getting married to her late husband, she moved to Chew Jetty. She used to sell Char Koay Teow at the kopitiam outside Chew Jetty at night, but she fell down one day and injured her leg. Then, she was unable to walk as frequent as last time, so she stopped frying Koay Teow at the kopitiam. To survive, she started cooking and selling foods in her house and sold them to the neighbours. Last time she used to sell prawn fritters, dumplings, fried sagos etc with the help of her daugther and some relative. But as time passes by, everyone has their own things to commit, she is now only cooking "Kiam Koay" , Fried Sagos, and Nasi Lemak at the weekend due to the lack of help. Althought the Jetties are listed as Unesco World Heritage site in 2008, she told us it didnt really boost her business because most tourist just walk pass their shop, and didnt buy the food. Mostly it was locals that came to buy her food, some even booked a few packs. She told me, "To survive and have enough money to eat and live comfortably, I have to cook and sell these foods every weekend" Although she was already at this age, she still work hard to make sure she can cover her cost of living and hopefully travel to other countries when the pandemic is over. She sells "Kiam Koay" and Fried Sago on Saturday and Nasi lemak on Sunday! Those who want to support her can visit her at Chew Jetty! She only sells limited quantity each day! She sells her food around 8am and closes around 12pm. #sonya7iii #sony #story #92 #92app #92KOLMY #TodayOn92 #Wallpaper
